Identifying Warning Signs and Behavioral Patterns
This lesson helps learners spot common warning signs and understand how recurring patterns can escalate harassment and harm a team.

Warning signs

Look for verbal remarks that belittle, stereotype, or demean based on protected traits; nonverbal cues such as hostile body language, avoidance, or exclusion; digital or social exclusion; repeated interruptions or hijacking conversations; and isolation from teams.

Patterns and escalation

Harassment often occurs in patterns rather than a single incident. Serial behavior can build a hostile climate within a team. Patterns may include targeting a single person repeatedly, alliance building to isolate others, or quiet retaliation after a report or challenge.

Impact on the workplace

Chronic harassment reduces trust, collaboration, and psychological safety. It elevates stress and turnover, undermines engagement, and lowers quality of work. Early recognition enables timely intervention and prevention of broader harm.

Recognition tips

  1. Document what you observe, including dates, quotes, and witnesses
  2. Note whether behavior targets protected characteristics
  3. Consider whether the behavior affects the team ability to work safely
