Overview

Bystander education trains employees to recognize harassment and safely intervene. It emphasizes that everyone can contribute to a respectful culture. The goal is to reduce harm, support targets, and deter future incidents through active engagement.

How to Intervene

  1. Direct intervention: calmly address the behavior in the moment if safe to do so.
  2. Shift the moment: redirect conversation or leave the situation if needed.
  3. Seek support: involve a supervisor or HR when appropriate, without escalating risk.
  4. Document and report: follow up with a formal report if concerns persist.

Training Practices

Use role play, scripts, and scenario based learning. Practice neutral language to de escalate. Include feedback from peers to improve responses. Make sessions interactive and non judgmental.

Encouraging Reporting

Proactively encourage reporting by reducing fear of retaliation. Provide easy, confidential options, and explain how reports are handled. Reassure witnesses that their action matters.

Support for Bystanders

Provide resources and follow up to bystanders who intervene. Ensure they are protected from retaliation and included in follow up conversations with leadership when appropriate.
