Definition and scope

Harassment is unwelcome conduct based on a person’s characteristics that creates a hostile, humiliating, or threatening work environment. It can take verbal, physical, or visual forms, and it may occur in person, online, or via messaging.

Discrimination means treating someone unfavorably because of protected characteristics such as race, gender, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation, or nationality.

Permissible feedback and constructive performance discussions differ from harassment when delivered respectfully and with clear intent to improve work performance.

Diversity and inclusion are key to building a respectful workplace, where differences are valued and treated with dignity.

Policy context: This chapter introduces the organization's standards for respectful conduct and the legal context that guides our expectations for behavior.
