This lesson examines how context and power dynamics influence bullying and harassment, and why consistent accountability matters across roles and relationships.

Contexts of Interaction

Bullying and harassment can occur between coworkers, supervisors and direct reports, or with external contractors. Each context affects investigation scope and accountability, and policies should apply consistently regardless of roles.

Power Imbalances

Power dynamics influence both harm and reporting. When a person in authority shows abusive behavior or uses social or professional leverage to pressure others, harm intensifies and deterrence weakens.

Examples by Context

  • Supervisor directing unsafe or demeaning tasks with threats of negative reviews.
  • Peers undermining a teammate through social exclusion or rumor-spreading.
  • Contractor intimidating staff or bypassing team norms.

Responding Effectively

Investigations should consider authority, access to channels for reporting, and non-retaliation protections. Treat all employees with equal seriousness and ensure remediation aligns with policy.
