Principles of Respectful Communication
Respectful communication means speaking and listening in ways that protect dignity, safety, and inclusion for all employees. It uses inclusive language, a calm tone, mindful pace, and open body language to invite participation from everyone, regardless of background.
In feedback and dialogue, use behavior-focused language, avoid labels, and express intent with care. Prefer I-statements such as I felt or I observed, and frame requests as collaborative outcomes rather than commands.
Practical norms support respectful exchanges: listen before replying, resist interruptions, and verify understanding. In emails, use neutral language, clear purpose, and respectful sign-offs. Regularly model these practices in meetings and decisions.
