Microaggressions and Subtle Bias
Microaggressions are small, often unintentional comments or behaviors that convey disrespect or stereotype a protected group. They accumulate and may create emotional harm over time.
Examples span race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, and religion. They may be comments about assumptions, jokes, or offhand remarks that stereotype or belittle.
Self awareness: be mindful of how words and actions affect others, and distinguish these from constructive feedback when intent is unclear.
Awareness tools: reflect on feedback, seek context, and practice respectful communication. Consider bystander intervention when witnessing microaggressions.
