The 3 D's approach

The framework—Direct, Distract, Delegate—helps you choose a safe and effective response. Each option prioritizes safety and supports the affected person.

Direct

Approach the person calmly and address the behavior. Keep the focus on the action, not personal traits. If needed, verbally pause the interaction and remove others from the situation.

Distract

Use a non-confrontational interruption to defuse the moment. Examples include inviting someone to join a different activity or redirecting attention with a neutral topic.

Delegate

Call on a supervisor, HR, or security when the risk is high or you feel unsafe intervening alone. Brief them with concise facts and preserve confidentiality.
