Bystander Intervention Techniques

Four proven approaches help in the moment: Direct intervention, Distract and redirect, Delegate to a trusted ally or supervisor, and Delay to check back later. Use the method that feels safest and most appropriate for the situation.

Direct intervention calls out the behavior and its impact in a calm, firm voice. It signals that the behavior is not acceptable and invites a pause in the activity or discussion. Direct action can prevent escalation and protect others.

Distract or redirect to interrupt the harm without escalating tension. Change the topic, invite others to speak, or suggest a short break. This buys time and creates space for a more inclusive environment.

Delegate to a trusted colleague or supervisor who can address the issue through proper channels. If possible, document the incident and share concerns with a responsible party, maintaining safety and privacy.

Delay to follow up after the moment. Check in with the target, gather facts, and offer support. Schedule a conversation with appropriate stakeholders to address the incident and prevent recurrence.
